It leaks oil. Also, it leaks more oil. On the other hand, it leaks oil. Oh an the transmission is basically fixed no real issues at all but did you know the car leaks oil? I have been told I should really get the oil leaks fixed (oil pan, VANOS line, valve cover). I’ll probably have them redo the VANOS line, but other than that this thing has always consumed a quart of oil every 800 miles (2 weeks with my commute) so it’ll be fine.
This pic is when it was new (to me). I don’t take pictures of it anymore because it looks turrible right now.

Don’t forget the oil filter housing gasket. That’s a fun one.

The tech didn’t mention that one needing replacement. It was done around 60k miles ago.

I’m in the same boat. Replaced the vanos, it wasn’t that bad, and the CCV lines, and the oil filter housing. Just one saturday and it was all done. But it still burns a quart every 800 miles.. but the car is so much fun to drive. dang I just wanna stick an LS in there and not have to worry about all the oil I go thru. And ours is starting to look beat up too. Bicycles, lawn mowers, tractors, jeeps, they all like bumping into it.

Atleast your oil won’t go bad between intervalls if you have to refill it all the time. If it really bothers you, you can try using a thicker oil. Lot’s of guys on the forums use 5W40 or even 10W40 in their M54s.

I know how you feel. Mine is in the shop right now to have the valve cover gasket and coils replaced. Started leaking oil about 2 months after I got it (bought it late September) and started running rough the week of Christmas. The joys of being a BMW owner I guess.

Hey, oil can’t get dirty when it doesn’t stay in the engine. So theres a win. It’s also a win when the Vanos starts to rattle and you get yourself your very own make-you-sad-machine.
All of those gaskets are really easy to do in all seriousness. It’s not a huge endeavor to get to them if you ignore the jibberish around the engine and focus on only what needs to be moved/removed to get them off. Ben der don dat

You’ve probably got another 60k til it leaks again then. I did my 323 at 140k and my wife’s 325 at 180k. No idea if they’d been done before that.

My 2001 330i was a turd that had all sorts of minor issues, and one major breakdown that prompted me to sell the car at a considerable loss.
Mine also leaked oil, from the back of the gasket up against the firewall. The 15k mile factory oil change interval was merely a filter change, because in practice all 7 quarts of oil would be replaced long before 15k miles were traveled. It would take me over a year to drive 15k miles, and since I would add a quart a month, sometimes more if I took a longer trip, none of the “original” oil from the dealer service would be remaining in the engine. What a neat trick, BMW. Fresh oil forever, headliner curtsies down off the C pillars to show its approval.
Leakiest, rattliest, most persnickety car I ever owned. The true tipping point is when the bolt that affixes a pulley to the power steering pump sheared in half, as in, the belt remained intact, but the head of the bolt and the body of the bolt decided to separate but still co-parent their children. You see, they loved each other, but.....
The car drove magnificently when new, but something was always wrong with mine. I have been told by BMW enthusiasts who guzzle the schnitzel flavored Koolaid out of Bavaria that I “got unlucky” and that it must have been a “Friday Build, haha”, you know, malaise era Detroit sentiments when your car disintegrates around you. It was a turd, and nothing but a turd, and my BMW didn’t make it to 100k miles. Best of luck to you with your E46. Beautiful looking cars for sure.

I recently had the rear main seal on the 328i repaired... Not fun.

Barf. That would be the transmission pulled back and oil pan off, right? I’m guessing that was about $1,500 or so?

I’m of the impression that I got one of the good ones. Besides the normal BMW issues it’s been great for the past 60k miles. I’m hoping to keep it for another 2 years and over 200k miles. Your C Pillar fabric comment makes me sad, as I currently have none left on my C Pillars.

See at 171k miles I’m all paranoid about changing the oil and what it’ll do to the engine.

Fortunately mine is mostly paint chips and some clear coat slowly peeling on the driver’s front fender. It’s almost dent-free and fortunately rust free.

Yeah that seems fair. Thicker oil shouldn’t be a problem though.
I would just wait and see what the VANOS fix does and then start thinking about the next steps.

The VANOS line is seeping vs. leaking, but it is a metal connector on a rubber line, so that’ll deteriorate fairly quickly.

I had the exact same factory wheels on mine, in the same color, but mine was a sedan.
Odd bit of model-specific maintenance advice: Get under the car and find the spot where water that gets into the sunroof drains through the hollow A-pillars. Clean out the leaves and detritus that builds up in there. It will eventually clog and then water will build up and eventually soak into the headliner and visors above you. I would find puddled water on the floor of my car, it was baffling, I had no idea how it got in there since I rarely opened the sunroof and assumed it was water tight. It is, sort of, with an internal gasket, but the outside is less than totally sealed off. It gets “into” the car but is supposed to drain down and through the A pillars and exit out by the wheel well.

There are the A Pillar drains and then I think the rear drains as well - whenever I add my bi-weekly quart of oil I usually scoop out the gunk that gets in there.

Yeah just a little under $1500. When my transmission was put back in they messed something up, I was pulling out into traffic in drive, RPM’s go up but the car doesn't move. Brought it back to them and gave them another hour to fix it.

Sounds like the issue I just had - the input sensor was wonky.

Yup, at least it was a simple fix. Oddly enough I've noticed that I'm getting worse MPG now, not sure if it had anything to do with that and maybe how the transmission is shifting. I feel like it holds gears longer.

Have you tried resetting your throttle adaptation? Might clear things up.

No, gonna give that a try today. I hope it'll clear it! The 328i is getting far worse MPG than the 335i is, and I drive it waaaay more spiritedly.
